My Grandfather Herbert Gilpin was in the Gordon Highlanders 6th Scottish Division Millatary No S/17698 and died in battle near the river Lys France 11-4-1918, His memorial is on the wall slab 115 to 119, The Loos Memorial forms the sides and back of Dud Corner Cemetery. He fell in action between the river Lys and the old southern boundary. The Lys Valley Dud Corner Cemetery stands almost on the site of a German strong point, the Lens Road Redoubt, captured by the 15th (Scottish) Division on the first day of the battle. The name "Dud Corner" is believed to be due to the large number of unexploded enemy shells found in the neighbourhood after the Armistice.

We come to visit my Great grandfather's memorial. It's always kept very nicely. Bring a coat it's nearly always windy.

My great uncle patrick brown is buried here. Killed aged 17 on 1/5/1916. Buried in a very peaceful place but a long way from his native Waterford Ireland. Never forgotten. Proud to have visited him.

In a vast open space, surrounded by Cornfields. Terrible back then, but incredibly peaceful now... R.I.P. to all the Servicemen Lost. :(
